The 1984 Video Game
Tetris- The first entertainment software
Alexley Pajitnov designed this brilliant tile-matching puzzle video game, the first playable version of which was completed on June 6, 1984. The tetris game derives it names from the Greek numerical prefix-tetra (all the game’s pieces contain four segments) and Tennis, which is Pajitnov’s favorite sport. The name also suggests that four-lines are cleared at once in the game. Let’s have a look at the history of the game.
From Soviet-Union to the United States, Tetris walked a long way, to become the first entertainment software to be exported. In the United States, it was published by Spectrum HoloByte for the Commodore 64 and IBM PC. The games uses tetrominoes, the four element case of polyominoes, which have been used in puzzles since 1907. The game began its journey from the IBM PC to the British software house Andromeda. Nintendo, Tengen, NES, Sega released various versions of the game over the years giving Tetris a boost.
In 1996, the rights of the game from the Russian state to Pajitnov, who founded the Tetris Company in the same year and claimed to hold copyright registrations for Tetris products in the U.S.
How to play tetris?
The game pieces shaped like tetriminoes, fall down the playing field in a random sequence. The game is to be played in such a way that the Tetriminos form a solid horizontal line without gaps. This is done by moving each one sideways and/or rotating each one by quarter-turns. When such a line is formed, it disappears and the line above it comes down. The game continues till the speed in which the Tetriminos fall increases. Most players fail to keep up with the speed. The game ends when a stack of Tetriminos reaches the top of the playing field and no new Tetriminos are able to enter. Tetris is now a classic arcade game! Very popular to the online arcade gaming crowd.
